There’s no question that rice krispie treats are an eternal favorite of both kids and adults alike. But since I love to kick things up a notch from time to time, I felt the need to share these elevated treats. They are perfect for your next holiday get-together.

Dark Chocolate Sea Salted Caramel Rice Krispie Treats

A twist on a classic, these treats combine both sweet & salty for the perfect combination of flavor

Ingredients

  • 6 cups puffed rice cereal
  • 4 tbsp tablespoons butter (plus extra for greasing the dish)
  • 1 bag 10.5 oz marshmallows
  • 3.5 oz semi sweet chocolate
  • 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp coarse sea salt
  • 2 oz caramel bits
  • 3 oz miniature dark chocolate chips

Topping

  • 3.5 oz semi sweet chocolate
  • coarse sea salt
  • .05 oz caramel bits

Instructions

  • Grease a 7×11 inch dish well with butter.
  • Add the puffed rice cereal to a large bowl.
  • To a large pot add the butter, marshmallows, semi sweet chocolate and cocoa powder. Melt over medium-high heat while stirring.
  • Once melted stir in the sea salt, caramel bits and mini dark chocolate chips. Quickly pour over the rice cereal and mix well until everything is evenly coated. Immediately transfer to the greased dish and lightly push down with your fingers until it is firm and evenly spread. Let cool for 15-30 minutes.

To make the Topping

  • Melt the semi sweet chocolate in the microwave. Sprinkle with sea salt. Leave to harden completely.
  • Pour over the cooled rice cereal mixture and spread evenly. Sprinkle with sea salt. Leave to harden completely.
  • Melt the caramel bits and drizzle over the chocolate. Leave to harden, then cut the Rice Krispie treats into 15 squares.
