Whew! How’s everybody doing now that month of madness has officially begun?!
Aaak! Every year I vow I’m not going to let the stress get to me……that I’m going to take care of all of my holiday business before December 1 so I can just enjoy spending time with friends and family. I figured out this week though that it’s not all the things and parties you KNOW you’re going to have to do and attend, it’s all the little things that pop up along the way. Couple the planned and the unplanned things up together and you’ve got the dreaded holiday stress, friends.

Trust me, I know it can be VERY easy to get caught up in all the have-to’s of the season. But, I encourage you to really try to extend a little bit of grace to yourself during this hectic season.

Here are a few tips to help you keep the joy of the season:

1. Resist the urge to have everything perfect.

As a recovering perfectionist myself, I know this is a tough but necessary one for your own sanity. It’s OK if you don’t painstakingly hand make those gifts for the kid’s teachers or if you buy premade cupcakes for the school party. I use to really beat myself up about this kind of stuff when our boys were younger. Ha! I finally learned that they actually PREFERRED those plain jane store bought cupcakes! Don’t sweat the small stuff, guys.

2. Christmas cards are completely optional.

Now, while I happen to enjoy putting Christmas cards together, it’s not for everyone and that’s A-ok. If you’re up for it and have the time, great, if not, don’t even sweat it. And hey, if you do really enjoy sending them but find that you just ran out of time before Christmas, do what I did one year and send a New Year’s card wishing family and friends a blessed new year. It will stand out in that crowd of Christmas cards, I can promise you that!

3. Maybe don’t shop til you drop.

There are a lot of friends and family to buy for, I totally get it…and I know that takes a bunch of time and energy looking for the ‘right’ gift. Maybe try grabbing a friend and doing your shopping together (misery loves company, right?! I’m kidding! Ha!) with coffee shop breaks in between where you just enjoy hanging out and catching up with each other. Sure makes the long hours walking on your feet a heck of a lot more fun when you’ve got a buddy with you.

4. Give yourself frequent time outs.

For the longest time I would go for nightly runs in our neighborhood after we put the boys to bed. I need to get back to that routine, but what I love most about it is that it just became my own little personal time…personal time to reflect on the day, talk and listen to what God was placing on my heart and honestly, just a flat out break from the busy-ness of the day.

I think the same should definitely apply during the holiday season. I really think you’ll find that it refreshes you and gets your mind in a positive place so you can jump back in the madness for a bit if need be.

5. Focus on the reason.

You had to know this one was coming, right? Ha! Honestly though, I know Christmas has become so much about buying gifts for everyone on your list, but it truly is all about the one incredible gift that was given to all of us…Jesus. When you find yourself stressing over the minor details, try to reel it in and really focus instead on Him and who He is in your life.

Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke and put it on you, and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit; and you will find rest.  ~Matthew 11:28-29

These tips are SOOOO GOOD! I’m an avid Christmas crazy person and for the most part I love the hustle and bustle, but sometimes I do feel overwhelmed! Number two was everything! I never thought about New Years cards!
