What to Wear to Washington Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras is a big deal around Louisiana. A very big deal, in fact.

So much so, that starting back in the 1940’s, to bring a sense of home to Louisianians now living in Washington D.C., a three day celebration called Washington Mardi Gras began.

The annual event is coming up quickly at the end of January 2024 and it’s a celebration dedicated to all things Louisiana in our nation’s capital. And with Drew Brees as the official King of the 2024 Mystic Krewe of Louisianians, it promises to be yet another exciting few days of fun and revelry for all.

The first question I ever get asked about the season of Mardi Gras is “what do you wear to Mardi Gras?”.

I always say you can never be too over the top for any Mardi Gras event or parade you attend. In fact, the more over the top the outfit, the more kudos and compliments you’ll receive. So now’s the perfect time to break out all your gold, purple and green sequins and don’t be afraid to layer on the sparkles. From formal Mardi Gras balls to more casual parades and festivities, there are a number of different directions you can go, in terms of looks.

If you’re headed to a formal ball, something “royal”-like and full of sparkles is traditional. Ball gowns, crowns, gloves….get ready to go all out!

If you’re planning to attend any of the Washington Mardi Gras parades, plan to wear comfortable (but festive!) shoes. You’ll be doing a lot of standing and walking. Layer up all the purple, green and gold accessories you can find! There are so many fun options these days. You’ll find yourself quickly getting carried away with it all, I promise! Mardi Gras is a time of letting your hair down and just having a great time. So, go all out, I say.

Non-stop Flights from Baton Rouge to D.C.

Once you’ve figured out what to wear (because priorities, right? 🙂 ), it’s time to start planning your trip to Washington D.C.

For competitive rates, ease of parking and convenience, consider flying BTR on one of their nonstop flights to D.C. After a busy holiday travel season of packed airports, you can feel good knowing you’ll be able to avoid the long lines when you opt for a BTR to DC flight. And with their daily morning nonstop flights to DC and returning flights to Baton Rouge in the evening, you can make a quick (or long) trip of it, whatever fits your schedule.
