Best Beauty Products for Women Over 40

Luzern Laboratories Skincare

I’m often asked about the products I use for my skin, hair and makeup, so today is the day I bring all that to you in an easy-to-find post. Some of my go-to products are things I’ve used for years and years and some are fairly new to me as I’ve gotten older and my skincare needs have changed. So let’s dive into my picks for best beauty products for women over 40.

Best Beauty Products for Women Over 40

As I get older, I do see a difference in the amount of moisture in my skin. While I don’t necessarily have dry skin entirely, I do find that I gravitate toward skincare that provides lots of hydration and is a little more emollient. The same applies for the haircare products I now use in my 40’s.

Skincare That Delivers

Gone are the days when I could just wash my face with whatever was laying on the bathroom sink and wake up with bouncy, glowy skin. 🤪 These days, it requires a little more effort and thought into what I use and how I use it.

Luzern Laboratories

I’ll be honest. As much as my wallet wanted to NOT like the Luzern line of products when they arrived at my doorstep, the unfortunate truth is that I absolutely fell in love with them. There’s something to be said for investing a bit more and getting a product that genuinely gets you results. I mean, it IS our face we’re talking about here, right? Long story short….if you can swing it, I highly recommend splurging on yourself with great skincare like Luzern. My personal favorites are the Force De Vie Creme Intensive, the L’Essentials Emulsion 6 and the Firming Collagen Booster.

Additional Tools That I love and Use Weekly

Also, I can’t say enough about adding in weekly steaming sessions to help with pore clearing and adding even more moisture to your skin prior to adding your serums and creams. It allows your products to really sink into your skin for maximum benefits. I snagged this compact and convenient facial steamer recently and I love how easy and fuss-free it is to use.

It’s also worth mentioning that every couple of weeks, as part of my beauty routine, I like to do a bit of dermaplaning on my own using the Michael Todd Beauty SonicSmooth Dermaplaning System. After having this process done only during professional facial treatments in the past, I was pleasantly surprised at the results I could get at home with this tool.

My Tried and True Hair Product Favorites

I’m fairly finicky when it comes to my hair tools and products. So when I find the thing that works for me, I’m a very loyal customer.

When Pete and I were first married 20 years ago, I worked in a hair salon and we carried the Bumble & Bumble brand, so I got to know the products really well.

So that being said, both the Bumble & Bumble and Verb brands are long time favorites of mine. (I also gravitate to just about anything from DryBar, including their Money Maker Hairspray. It smells amazing!)

T3 Micro Hair Tools

I’ve been a very long time user of the T3 hair tools brand. I did a review on their hairdryer several years back and I have not wavered in my love for all of their heat tools. Every one that I have owned has held up beautifully over the years, especially the T3 Twirl Trio interchangeable curling iron. (The 1 1/4″ barrel is my everyday size choice.)

***IMPORTANT! Don’t forget to protect your locks before you start curling! My go-to heat protectant spray is DryBar’s Hot Toddy.

The Olaplex Haircare Line

This line has taken on a bit of a cult following the past year, and for good reason. Both the No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo and the No. 3 Hair Perfector are both super hydrating. Those two products, along with the No. 5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner, have been a big part of repairing the damage that wearing extensions has done to my hair over the past 3+ years. I feel like my hair thanks me every time I use it.

Verb Ghost Oil

I first learned about Verb Ghost Oil while on a staycation in New Orleans with a friend a couple of years ago. After purchasing it several times since then, I’m so glad she told me about it. I use it as I section my hair during the blow drying process. Each section gets a pump of it from roots to ends. The thing that’s so impressive about it is that even though it delivers big hydration and smooths your hair out, it never feels greasy or too heavy. The product specs describe it as “a weightless, restorative oil that hydrates, strengthens, and smooths strands for shiny, frizz-free hair” and honestly, that’s exactly what it does. Great stuff.

Makeup Favorites New and Old

Just like some of the other beauty products I use above, there are my ride-or die daily makeup favorites that have been a part of my routine for years and years. While I do often venture out into something fun like the newest Tarte eyeshadow palette or a new highlighter, there are items that I just can’t part with.

Foundation and Powders

I’ve been using Lancome’ Dual Finish Powder in Honey III for what feels like eons now. During college I used to work at the Chanel makeup counter, so I got to know what each department store makeup brand had the best what. And while the Chanel Glossimer Lip Gloss was my go-to lip product, the Dual Finish Powder was, and still is, my very favorite fuller coverage powder for days that I don’t wear a liquid foundation.

As for a liquid foundation, my long time favorite is the Mineral Velvet Creme in the color NY by local Louisiana makeup artist Ashley Sievert. It gives a really beautiful airbrush finish and a fuller coverage. I have loved and used it for 5+ years now.

I use this loose powder to set that liquid foundation for the day.

Eyeshadows, Mascara and Liners

I’m currently loving the Tartlette In Bloom eyeshadow palette for my brown eyes. It’s filled with all the perfect warm neutral browns, pinks and creams that I gravitate toward.

I have two favorite concealers that I use interchangeably. The famous Shape Tape and then my drugstore favorite option.

My other products for eyes are this liner for lining my upper waterline, and this long time favorite drugstore mascara and lash primer. (I’ve tried many of the expensive ones and I always go back to this one.)

Contour, Blush and Highlight

I’ve been using the Benefit Hoola contour for a couple of years now. I find the color is a great neutral shade for adding some contour to my naturally fair skin. For blush/bronzer, I love the look this gives me, along with the Hoola.

Lip Colors and Liners

Ok, if there every was a makeup product color that has eluding me for so many years, it would be the exact perfect shade of lip liner. Guys, I’m picky, picky. I want it neutral, but not brown, pink undertones, but not pink at all. After trying so many over the years and and plenty being sent me to test out, I’ve been sold on two shades in the Makeup Forever line. The colors are Anywhere Caffeine and Wherever Walnut. Can’t go wrong with either if you’re looking for a neutral lip liner that stays put.

After applying and filling my whole lip with the liner, I then usually finish it off with Huda Liquid Matte lipstick in the shade Venus. And because I like to add a touch of a highlight, I dab just a little bit of this NYX Butter Gloss in the color Madeleine to only the center of my lips.
